Required Installed Resources (LAMP)

  • Linux (Ubuntu)
  • Apache
  • mySQL
  • php

Additionally, user needs sudo privileges

Steps

(taken almost entirely from https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-wordpress-on-ubuntu-12-04)

Download and intall

Go to target directory (suggested: /var/www)
cd pathname

Download the latest wordpress build
wget http:wordpress.org/latest.zip

Unzip the downloaded file
unzip latest.zip
rm latest.zip

Setup the SQL database

Login to mySQL
mysql -u root -p

Create a database for your site
CREATE DATABASE wordpress;
Console should respond: Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)

Create a new user for your site to use
CREATE USER wordpressuser@localhost;
Console should respond: Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

Set a password for this user
SET PASSWORD FOR wordpressuser@localhost= PASSWORD("password");
Console should respond: Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

Give this user privileges
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON wordpress.* TO wordpressuser@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
Console should respond: Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

Refresh
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Console should respond: Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

exit

Configure WordPress

Copy the example config file
cd wordpress-directory
cp wp-config-sample.php wp-config.php

Open this file with a text-editor
vi wp-config.php

In the section
{{ // ** MySQL settings - You can get this info from your web host ** // }}

Change the following lines:
line1 --> define('DB_NAME', 'wordpress');
