Attendance and retention could have been better. The classroom was a good size for the number of participants; had there been many more, it would have been too crowded. People enjoyed it and were enthusiastic about more hackathons. People said the first prize was too generous compared to the others. Next time we should publicize the award categories and balance the prizes better.
Melissa will return the outlets to Facilities.
We had $1900 and we spent under $1000.
Our next hackathon we might schedule during the first weekend of fall semester. This is very tentative.
Ryan Miling will present Django this week.
On Thursday we are cosponsoring a talk at 3:00 in Shillman about the Great Firewall.
Show and Tell will be next week. Five have signed up. Nick is encouraged to present his hackathon entry.
The West Village quad is reserved for the barbecue the week after. We have to sign a food waiver, which among other things bans mayonnaise. The grill has not yet been reserved. We must remember to get the fire extinguisher. Chris will schedule a rain date for the next day.
The purpose of the barbecue is not to attract new members, any more than any other event. It is more about retaining old members.
Melissa has prepared a draft list of future events.
We will not use the old system, but instead appoint Roderic to be collect nominations by the time of the barbecue.
We will let voters choose their top three choices.
To ensure that voters are eligible, we might require them to submit their NUID and CCIS username. Alternatively we might use Ballotbin. Nick will talk to Roderic about it tonight.
If we continue doing relatively expensive things like hackathons and barbecues, we should take advantage of Northeastern's student activity fee.
We must plan things farther in advance.
We must get more people to go to meetings.
Chris suggests that a prerequesite for going to conferences should be membership in NUACM. Doreen might not like that idea because she does not want ACM to have preferential treatment. NUACM would not replace the current process, but would act as a filter.
Why people should become members
- Movie tickets and movie nights
- Mentor program and one-on-one with global tutors
- Hack space
- Coop connections
- Company visits
